Cast in Bronze

The podcast “Cast in Bronze” talks about Trina Robinson’s journey of discovering her enslaved ancestral history. I chose the paper tree as the framing device, inspired by the idea of family trees as well as the tangible nature of historical documents like slave records and tax documents. The torn paper pieces will gracefully converge to form the silhouette of branches that gradually grow into a majestic tree.

Paper, Clay, Photography, Photoshop, Lightroom
Process
I collected copyright-free slave documents, printed them on newsprint, tore them in pieces, and used them as leaves and barks. Since I wanted to emphasize the tangible nature of paper, I tried to capture as many texture details as possible with my camera. To control the amount of information displayed in a frame, I left some leaves blank and photoshopped the images in the post-production. I also spent time adjusting the background shade both physically with lighting and digitally with Lightroom.
